Homeschool Journey
We have decided to homeschool! I wanted to create a blog because we are a secular homeschool family from southern Idaho and I have found the secular homeschool community is a bit lacking. We don't have anything against religion or anything, we just choose not to influence our children's beliefs.
I have done lots of research about homeschooling before coming to this decision, and here's the honest truth. We are in 2020, and yes Coronavirus sucks. Our schools were closed from March 15th until September 8th. My son, who is now in 4th grade, has fallen academically behind because he wasn't able to be in school during that time.
We attempted virtual learning, and honestly, it was overloaded with students on it at one time, and it would constantly not connect or just wouldn't work. As an educated person, my son cannot learn like that. I have previously studied law and education (history major) in college, and felt I could do whatever it takes to provide my son a worthy education. With that said, here's what I am currently struggling with: Transitioning from the public school system to homeschool can be challenging! There's been days I have wanted to give up, but I am not in the position to send my son in person. My son only knows public school, and adjusting has been a bit difficult. If you personally struggle with this issue, I recommend you stay calm because if you're stressed out, then they will become stressed out. Just remember to breathe.
I hope to share free or cheap resources I have found through this blog, and perhaps it would help the next person who decides to begin their own homeschool journey. Just remember you are not alone and you CAN do this. We may not be born teachers in the aspect that we think of when public school comes to mind, but we have been teaching our children things since they were born.
As always,
Stay safe in this crazy yet challenging time.
